Key takeaways

  • Of the 31 other firms on the four lists, 13 publish a price. Their starting prices run $1,200 to $15,000 a month.
  • Published hourly rates run $200 to $400.

We analyzed who we believe are the top fractional CMOs in four industries: law firms, home service companies, healthcare practices and DTC brands.

Below is what we saw, the top four in each industry with a link to each full top 10, and what a fractional CMO costs.

What we saw

  • Most specialize in one industry. Some don't. HVAC Fractional works only with HVAC companies, and Esquire Interactive only with law firms. Generalists such as Chief Outsiders, which is on all four lists, and MarketerHire serve many industries.
  • Fewer than half publish a price. Of the 31 other firms across the four lists, 13 publish a starting price. Those prices run from $1,200 a month (Medical Grade Media) to $15,000 a month (Shashank Shalabh). Most start between $3,000 and $7,000.
  • Some lead only. Others also do the work. LEXGRO, LegalFenix and HVAC Fractional set strategy and direct the vendors you already have. Foster Web Marketing, PatientX Agency and Hawke Media pair the CMO with their own agency team.
  • The right fit runs an operating system for your business. Work with someone who installs an operating system: a set way to measure, decide, assign and review the work every week. At the fractional CMO level, a firm without one is not the right fit.

How we picked: each firm had to show work in that industry on its own website, name the person who leads it, and back it up with something we could check, such as a named client, a track record or a published price.

What a fractional CMO does

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader you hire for part of the week, for a monthly fee, instead of a full-time executive. They set the plan and the budget, decide which channels get the money, direct your agencies and team, and answer for one number: signed cases, booked jobs, booked patients or contribution margin.

Your agencies and staff keep doing the daily work. The CMO reads every vendor's report against that number and decides where next month's budget goes.

Three things move the price: hours per week, how senior the leader is, and whether the fee includes people who do the work. Example: Sequoia GEO's CMO starts at $7,000 a month. Its execution team adds $4,500, for $11,500.

Hourly rates

RankedCMO lists $200 to $400 an hour, inBeat lists $200 to $350, and Compass Fractional charges $250 for a consultation hour. Hourly fits advice and second opinions. Leading your marketing usually runs on a monthly retainer.

Against a full-time CMO

LEXGRO's guide puts a full-time CMO at $305,000 to $625,000 a year, counting salary, benefits, bonus and recruiting. It puts a fractional engagement at $60,000 to $180,000 a year, which is $5,000 to $15,000 a month.

At the low end of both, fractional costs about a fifth as much: $60,000 against $305,000. Run your own numbers in the fractional CMO cost calculator.

How to hire a fractional CMO

Fractional CMO, agency or full-time hire

  • A fractional CMO gives you senior direction for part of the week. Hire one when you need a leader now and can't yet justify, or find, a full-time executive.
  • An agency gives you hands in one or more channels, such as ads, SEO or design. Hire one when you know what needs doing. It reports on its own channel.
  • A full-time CMO gives you a leader every day. Hire one when marketing needs daily leadership and a team under it.

If direction is missing, start with leadership. If hands are missing, add an agency or staff. If both are missing, start with leadership so the people doing the work have a plan.

Questions to ask on the first call

  1. Who leads my account, by name? Ask how many hours a week that person gives you, and who does the work under them.
  2. Which businesses like mine have you run? Ask for the result in your industry's number: signed cases, booked jobs, booked patients or contribution margin.
  3. What operating system do you run? Ask to see the dashboard, the weekly meeting and how tasks get assigned and reviewed.
  4. What happens in the first 30 days? A good answer names the accounts they will open, the numbers they will pull and the first decision you will get.
  5. Do you lead only, or do the work too? If they lead only, ask who runs each channel and who pays for it.
  6. What do I own when we stop? Ad accounts, analytics, CRM, creative and the plan should all be in your name.
  7. How do you get paid? Ask whether they take fees or referral payments from any vendor they recommend.

Red flags

  1. No named leader. A senior person sells you, then someone else runs your account.
  2. No operating system. You get a plan and no set way to measure, decide and review the work each week.
  3. Reports on leads, clicks or ROAS only. None of those is revenue.
  4. Your ad accounts in their name. When you part ways, the account history leaves with them.
  5. No work in your industry they can show you. The first months go to learning how your business makes money.
  6. Months of commitment before a written plan. The plan should come first.
