How Patients Use AI to Find a Doctor, and How to Get Booked
Key takeaways
- Since October 28, 2026, AI agents including Google Gemini and Amazon Health AI can book appointments through Zocdoc, using only the availability, insurance and visit types your listing shows.
- A rater8 vendor survey found 47% of patients used AI to find a new provider by mid-2026, up from 31% at the end of 2025, and 60% trusted the AI summary without checking it.
- In the example on this page, a practice the AI skips loses 8 new patients and $9,600 a month in first-year value.
- Make six fields match everywhere: name and address, hours, insurance plans, services, providers and open new patient slots.
- Fix them in order: a master sheet, your website, Google Business Profile, Zocdoc, insurer directories, then a monthly check with one owner.
Patients ask AI tools like Gemini or ChatGPT for a nearby provider who takes their insurance and has openings soon. The AI pulls from your website, Google Business Profile and directories such as Zocdoc, and since October 28, 2026, agents can book through Zocdoc directly. Practices whose hours, insurance and services don't match get skipped.
On October 28, 2026, Zocdoc opened its booking system to AI agents. Google Gemini and Amazon Health AI are already connected, and a new partner, Instinct, lets a patient's assistant check insurance and book straight into a provider's calendar.
A patient can now type "find me a dentist near me who takes my plan and can see me this week," and an agent picks the practice and holds the slot.
The agent books only what it can verify. That means your real availability, the insurance plans you actually take and the services you actually offer. If your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings disagree, the agent has no reason to trust any of them, and it books the practice down the street.
Patients already search this way. A rater8 survey of about 1,000 US patients (vendor research) found 47% had used AI to find a new provider by mid-2026, up from 31% at the end of 2025.
The fix is plain data work. Make your hours, insurance list, services and open new patient slots say the same thing everywhere an AI tool reads them. Start by putting your website, Google Business Profile and Zocdoc listing side by side and listing every mismatch.
What changed on October 28
Zocdoc opened booking to outside AI agents through its MCP server, a standard connection that lets an assistant read listings and book appointments. Coverage of the Zocdoc and Instinct launch lays out the rules:
- Agents must register with Zocdoc.
- Agents must get the patient's explicit consent before they book.
- The agent books against the availability, insurance and visit types in your listing.
Zocdoc's CEO, Oliver Kharraz, warned that agents can book nonexistent or out-of-network slots when availability and insurance data are unreliable. Then a patient shows up for a slot you don't have, or with a plan you don't take.
Zocdoc is also moving the insurance check earlier. It acquired Sohar Health, whose tools confirm eligibility and network status, sometimes from just a name and date of birth. Patients will expect to know you take their plan before they book.
Why patients trust the AI answer
The same rater8 data, reported by MediaPost, has two numbers every owner should read together:
- 66% of patients said they had seen incorrect provider information from an AI tool.
- 60% trusted the AI summary without checking it.
Adults aged 45 to 60 used AI to find a provider the most.
A separate survey summarized by Medical Economics put AI's influence on the final choice lower, at 26%. Either way, a meaningful share of new patients now meet your practice through an AI answer first, and most won't check it against your website.
What a skipped listing costs
The inputs below are example numbers.
Example: 200 people a month in your area search for a provider like you. 25% of them start in an AI tool, so 50 searches go through an assistant. The assistant shows three practices that match the patient's plan and timing.
| Step | Listed and consistent | Skipped |
|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted searches | 50 | 50 |
| Your practice is in the shortlist | 50 | 0 |
| Patient picks you (1 in 3) | 17 | 0 |
| Books and shows up (about half) | 8 | 0 |
Example numbers. Use your own search volume and show rate.
At an example $1,200 in first-year value per new patient:
- 8 patients × $1,200 = $9,600 a month
- $9,600 × 12 = $115,200 a year
None of this shows up on a report. Your practice management software counts the patients who booked. It never sees the agent that read "Delta Dental PPO" on your website, "Delta Dental" on Google and nothing on Zocdoc, and moved on.
Check six fields everywhere they appear
An AI tool pulls from several sources at once, so one wrong field can drop you from an answer. Check these six:
| Field | Where it lives | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Name, address, phone | Website, Google Business Profile, Zocdoc, Healthgrades, Yelp | Same suite number, same main line, same spelling of the practice name |
| Hours | Website, Google Business Profile, Zocdoc | Same hours everywhere, including Saturdays and holiday hours |
| Insurance plans | Website insurance page, Zocdoc, insurer directories | Exact plan names (for example, "Aetna PPO," not "most major insurance"), and plans you dropped are removed |
| Services and visit types | Website service pages, Google Business Profile services, Zocdoc visit types | Same names for the same visits, and every service you want booked is listed |
| Providers | Website team page, Zocdoc, insurer directories | Every current provider listed, anyone who left removed, new patient status correct |
| Open new patient slots | Online scheduler, Zocdoc calendar | Slots shown are real and match your practice management software |
"Most major insurance accepted" is the most common gap. A patient asks for a provider in network with a specific plan. A vague answer can't be verified, so the agent picks a practice that names the plan.
Fix your listings in this order
Work from the source of truth outward, so every fix copies the right data.
- Write one master sheet. List your legal practice name, address, main phone, hours, every insurance plan by exact name, every service and visit type, and every provider. Your office manager signs off on it.
- Fix your website first. Give insurance its own page with exact plan names. Give each main service its own page. AI tools and patients both read it.
- Fix your Google Business Profile. Match the hours, services and categories to the sheet. Check it weekly, because industry roundups report that Google may publish unanswered suggested edits from the public after four days.
- Fix Zocdoc, if you list there. Match insurance, visit types and providers, and confirm the calendar shows only slots you can fill.
- Fix insurer directories and the rest. Update each payer's provider directory, then Healthgrades, Yelp and any specialty directory you use.
- Give one person the monthly check. Same sheet, same six fields, first Monday of every month.
Make it specific to your specialty
Each type of practice has one field that agents and patients ask about first:
- Dental: exact PPO plan names and whether you offer same-day emergency exams. A fractional CMO for dental clinics starts with the insurance page.
- Med spa: treatment names patients search for, such as Botox, fillers and laser hair removal, with consult pricing where you publish it. Most med spas are cash-pay, so the service list does the work insurance does elsewhere. See marketing for med spas.
- Chiropractic: which plans cover visits, cash rates for the first visit, and whether you see auto injury cases.
- Orthodontics: whether the first consult is free, whether you offer clear aligners, and the age ranges you treat.
- Therapy: in-network plans, out-of-network options, telehealth and whether each clinician is accepting new clients. Stale "accepting new clients" flags send agents to full calendars. More for psychotherapy clinics.
- Ketamine: whether you need a referral, what screening happens first and what is cash-pay.
Show real availability
An agent books the slots your calendar shows. If your online scheduler or Zocdoc calendar shows times that don't exist, you get the nonexistent-slot booking Zocdoc's CEO warned about.
- Open only the new patient slots you choose, written straight from your practice management software.
- Hold one or two new patient slots a day so the next opening isn't three weeks out.
- Close slots the moment a provider calls out.
The same front desk leaks that lose callers lose agent bookings. Our guide to where new patients drop out before the first visit covers the calls, confirmations and no-shows that follow the booking.
Decide whether to list on Zocdoc
Agents can only book you through Zocdoc if you are on Zocdoc. Answer three questions before you sign up:
- Do you have open new patient capacity? If your schedule is full for six weeks, more bookings won't help yet.
- Can you keep the calendar accurate? A listing with wrong slots creates bookings your front desk has to undo.
- What does a new patient cost today? Compare Zocdoc's current pricing, which you get from Zocdoc, against what your ads and SEO cost per booked new patient.
If you don't list, the rest of this page still applies. AI tools still read your website, Google Business Profile and directories when they recommend a practice.
Keep patient privacy in the picture
Your hours, insurance plans and services are business information, not patient information, so publishing them consistently is low risk. The booking itself carries patient details, and Zocdoc requires agents to get the patient's consent.
Your exposure sits on your own website. Ad pixels and tracking tags on booking, form and condition pages are where practices have faced lawsuits. The healthcare practice marketing stack covers which pages to keep tags off. Ask your healthcare attorney how HIPAA and your state's health data laws apply to your setup. This page isn't legal advice.
Track whether AI sends you patients
You can measure this without new software.
- Add an intake option. On "How did you hear about us?", add "AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini or similar)."
- Run a monthly prompt test. Ask two AI tools the question your patient would ask, such as "orthodontist near [your town] that offers free consults." Write down which practices come back and whether yours shows up with the right details.
- Count Zocdoc bookings by month. If you list there, watch for growth after October 28.

Questions owners ask
How do patients use AI to find a doctor?
They ask an AI tool for a provider nearby who takes their insurance, offers a specific service and has openings soon. The tool pulls from practice websites, Google Business Profiles and directories, and through Zocdoc some agents can now book the appointment too. A rater8 vendor survey found 47% of patients had used AI to find a new provider by mid-2026.
Can AI book a doctor's appointment?
Yes. Since October 28, 2026, registered AI agents can book through Zocdoc after they get the patient's explicit consent, and Google Gemini and Amazon Health AI are already connected. The agent books against the availability, insurance and visit types in the practice's listing.
How do I get my practice recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini?
Make your hours, insurance plans, services, providers and contact details match on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory. Name insurance plans exactly and give each main service its own page. Then test it monthly by asking two AI tools the question your patient would ask.
Is AI appointment booking HIPAA compliant?
It depends on the tool and how it handles patient information, so ask any booking vendor whether it will sign a business associate agreement (BAA) and how it stores patient data. Publishing your hours, insurance plans and services is business information, not patient information. Check your setup with a healthcare attorney, since state health data laws can add rules.
Do I need to be on Zocdoc for AI agents to book my practice?
Agents can only book you through Zocdoc if you list there. AI tools still read your website, Google Business Profile and directories when they recommend a practice, so consistent listings matter either way. List on Zocdoc only if you have open new patient capacity and can keep the calendar accurate.
